Archiving My Jewelry - Items #3 and #4 (The Mommy/Daughter Matching Thing)
I started archiving my jewelry here so that my daughter would one day know how I amassed such a collection of (mostly) costume jewelry. She'll get it all one day, that lucky girl. But she'll have to add it to the collection that she has already started. She's 5, by the way. Yes, I've created a monster. May I introduce you to Items #3 and #4 in my jewelry collection - matching bangles!

Purchased in Artesia, California (Little India) - 2011

I Miss Typewriters And I'm Not In Love With My DVR
The other day, I was at an antique store with my young daughter when she pointed at a strange instrument with letter keys. She asked, "Mommy, what is that?" To which I answered, "Sweetie, that's a typewriter. That's what we used to type letters, before computers." But now our lives are so much better, right?
Aside from making me feel ancient, the incident reminded me how much I yearn for the simpler days of yore when we weren't tethered to our computers, smart phones, DVRs and other devices that are supposed to make our lives easy.
While many of my friends pride themselves on being early adopters of technology, I actually like being as fashionably late as possible to the gadget party. Friends and holiday gift guides are always promising me that "this" gadget will change my life. And yes, some gadgets have, but not always for the better.
Take the DVR. What was promised: "This will change the way you watch TV. You'll never miss your favorite shows. You can skip all of the commercials and watch your shows whenever you want." The Reality: Yes, it has changed the way I watch TV - it has made TV watching more stressful. I have to make sure all of my favorite shows are recorded and then constantly check to make sure the DVR isn't full. When I add new shows, I reorder my priority list. And then I have to find time in my busy schedule to actually watch the shows. I end up deleting most of what I record because I don't have time to watch. And that makes me sad.
How about the flat screen TV? What was promised: "Stellar sound and picture quality - once you see TV in high definition, you won't go back to regular TV." The Reality: I held out for as long as I could on this one. I had a tube TV up until the beginning of 2008. I'm not kidding. In my mind, nothing was wrong with it but apparently, I didn't know what I was missing. Well, I guess I still don't know. I never really cared much for quality of picture and sound so much as the content of what I'm watching. I don't care to see how people's faces really look like up close, or to hear high quality sounding gun shots and special effects with crystal clear picture quality. This stuff just doesn't matter to me. But that's just me.
So all of this is to simply to say I've just learned something about myself - apparently my interest in vintage things also extends to vintage technology. Can't help it - I'm just a girl who lives in the present, plans for the future, but still yearns for a little bit of the past. I guess there are worse things in life. I could be missing my favorite shows and watching them with inferior picture and sound quality. :)

Archiving My Jewelry - Item #2
The archiving of my jewelry continues, slowly but surely. This jewelry purchase occurred around 2002, when I was going through a phase of only purchasing items from Target off the clearance racks. It became a sort of game for me. I had a plan of attack for each nearby Target: first, I made a beeline for the jewelry/accessory clearance racks, then the clothes and then the shoes. If I had time, I would hit up housewares. I loved seeing those little orange stickers and gave myself bonus points for spotting something now on sale that I had wanted to purchase before at "full price." Yeah, I'm kinda weird when it comes to shopping. But what resulted from this phase was a whole lot of (cheap) jewelry. And the cheap stuff always gets me the most compliments! Go figure.
Here's a cute little birdie necklace I snagged during my Target phase. It sort of has a neutral color and yet has the birdie detail that makes it stand out. It was so cheap I hope it's still intact if/when my daughter wears it!

Purchased at Target - 2002

Do Fries Go With That Milkshake?
When I was at one of the Thread shows months ago, I came across this t-shirt brand that I just love - Detroit Sprinkles. The shirts are screen printed in a garage in LA. And since they are individually screened by hand, no two t-shirts are alike. We can thank three Detroit natives who grew up on the same street for coming up with the super cute designs. Here's the milkshake t-shirt I nabbed at Thread and I'm oh-so-glad the weather's getting warmer...I'm so ready to take this t-shirt out for a spin. By the way, my t-shirt came in a can. LOVE it!

Archiving My Jewelry - Item #1
I have a massive collection of jewelry. There, I've said it. Now, granted most of it is costume jewelry. But regardless, I have a lot of it. My mom once joked that I could wear a different piece of jewelry each day for a year and never repeat a piece. That's completely bogus. I actually think I could go for two years. :)
Why have I amassed such a collection? Well duh, I love accessories! But almost every piece in the collection has a special meaning to me - I remember where I purchased each item, about how much it cost and why I bought it.
It still is a lot to take in. It can take me hours to decide which pieces to bring on a weekend trip! One day, I do plan to pass the collection on to my one and only daughter and I really want her to know the meaning behind each piece she will one day wear. So with that mind, I'm starting a new regular feature, if you will, on this blog that no one reads - "Archiving My Jewelry." I will periodically write about one piece of my collection and number that piece. Some day (maybe two years from now!) I'll finish archiving the collection. Here's piece #1...
"Orange Bead Necklace" - Item #1
Purchased at Elsewhere Vintage, Orange, CA - January 2011
Vintage, circa 1960s
$8.00
LOVE LOVE LOVE this necklace, purchased just recently at a vintage store in Orange, California. Why I love it? The color, for one. Plus it reminds me of all of the color bead necklaces I used to wear in the 80s but that I sold at a flea market thinking I would never want to wear them again. Boo hoo. Well, I'm holding on to this one for a while. Hope my daughter likes orange.

Clothes That Stand the Test of Time
Reaching a "milestone" birthday recently has made me take a second look at my closet. There are several things in there that I "can" still wear (read: the clothes fit) but that I probably shouldn't wear (read: I'm a little too old for things like mini skirts). Let's face it - at my age, I already know what looks good on me, as far as shapes, colors, styles, etc. I'm just too old and tired to fight it so I've finally decided to just stick to what I know.
This is not to say that I've decided never to touch anything trendy or super hot at the moment. That's what Forever 21 is for. :) I'm saying, there are certain styles of clothes that will always stand the test of time. Clothes that look good no matter what age you are. Clothes that you can leave in your closet, not wear for 10 years - and then take them out and wear them and still look good. (Well, usually still look good.)
In other words, what's classic is always new again.
So a vintage shopping we go...
Lately I've been uber-fascinated with vintage clothes from almost every era. It's so true that fashion comes back around over and over again. If I were a fashion designer, I would just go back to different eras and do a different take on trends that worked in the past. But since I can't design or sew, I'll just take vintage clothes and put my own twist on them with my own personal styling.
Starting this year, I'm on a mission to only wear vintage or vintage-inspired clothes. The classic lines and shapes are going to do this aging body wonders (I hope!). You'll hopefully be seeing my latest vintage finds this year. Until then, here are a few photos that are inspiring me...
